A widespread springtime severe weather outbreak is expected Tuesday into Tuesday night from the Southern Plains into the Midwest.
Two distinct corridors of significant severe thunderstorm potential are being monitored across this broader zone.

The most significant risk for supercell thunderstorms producing 2”+ diameter hail and a few tornadoes is expected across northern and central Illinois on Tuesday evening into Tuesday night, perhaps extending into neighboring areas of eastern Iowa, northern Missouri, and northern Indiana. As storms become more widespread overnight, damaging wind gusts and locally heavy rainfall will also be possible.
Across the Southern Plains a less organized, but still dangerous risk for a few severe thunderstorms exists this evening into tonight. A broken line of thunderstorms capable of producing severe hail, damaging wind gusts, and a couple of tornadoes should develop roughly along the I-35 corridor from southern Kansas into Oklahoma and north Texas.
As the storm system and associated cold front moves east, so too will the risk of severe weather, stretching from the Ohio Valley into the Southern U.S. on Wednesday.
