Severe Weather

Severe Weather Outbreak Today | June 11th, 2026

A significant severe weather event is expected to continue unfolding today across portions of the Midwest, with the greatest concern stretching from Iowa into northern Illinois, Indiana, and Lower Michigan. The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded parts of the region to a Moderate Risk, highlighting the potential for widespread and impactful severe weather.

A large cluster of storms that developed overnight across Nebraska and Iowa is already producing damaging winds this morning as it moves east-northeast. This activity is expected to continue through midday across eastern Iowa and northern Illinois, bringing the threat of damaging straight-line winds and perhaps a few tornadoes as storms interact with a warm, unstable air mass farther east.

The atmosphere remains highly supportive of severe weather development today. Strong winds just above the surface continue to transport warm, humid air northward into the Midwest, while an unusually strong upper-level disturbance for mid-June moves across the Corn Belt. Even though this morning's storms have left behind pockets of rain-cooled air and outflow boundaries, those same boundaries could become the focus for renewed severe thunderstorm development later this afternoon.

Exactly where the most intense storms develop later today will depend in part on how quickly the atmosphere recovers behind this morning's activity. However, the overall setup strongly suggests another round of severe storms will develop by late afternoon and continue into the evening. Damaging winds and tornadoes will remain the primary concerns, with the severe threat shifting eastward into Illinois, Indiana, Lower Michigan, and areas near Lake Michigan through tonight.
