Evidence continues to support the predictions released by the seasonal forecast models for an "East-Based" El Niño event. These events favor deeper convective events over the eastern half of the Equatorial Pacific which are colocated with the largest positive sea surface temperature anomalies (the 1997 El Niño is an excellent example of these types of East-Based El Niño events). I've created two maps that show the composite precipitation anomalies for all strong, East-Based El Niño events since 1950 for May-July (top) and July-September (bottom)
