There isn't a lot of surprise here, but I wanted to include the latest from the CPC. They are predicting that El Niño will be the dominant mode of tropical trade wind behavior by June-July-August 2026. Remember that ENSO conditions in summer have a lower correlation with summer temperature and precipitation patterns than most people think. Across the US, the typically correlation coefficient with the summer weather pattern is below 0.3. This means that only about 9% of the summer precipitation pattern can be explained by El Niño. The other 91% can be explained by sub-seasonal impacts like the Bermuda High position, the Sea Surface Temperatures in the Northeast Pacific, or the MJO movement.
